In ancient times when the world was still young the North American continent split apart spewing molten lava across the land scorching and burning every thing in its path. This great rift in the earth's crust was the creation of the Greatest of the Great Lakes, as the French would say "Lac Superieur". Torn from the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, by tremendous tectonic forces, a small band of prehistoric bedrock was thrust to the surface in the middle of this mighty lake creating an isolated world within a vast inland sea. In modern times Lake Superior has cooled and now relinquishes Monster Lake Trout, with the State record of 60 plus pounds. This beautiful lake has a hidden secret know only to a small percentage of the population which holds these Trophy Lakers, "Stannard Rock" located approximately 45 miles North of Marquette, Michigan in the very heart of Lake Superior.
In early spring the gin clear waters settle down from the raging storms of last years gales to create what some say is the worlds finest Lake Trout fishery. Venture offshore to the remote reefs to hunt and catch Giant Lake Trout on light weight spinning tackle. You cast spoons, spinners and jigs to "Hook Your Own" Trophy Lakers. Offshore fishing start in May and extends through September. The historical weapon of choice is the lead head jig on a light spinning rod. This ancient weapon in the hands of a dedicated sportsman is an instrument of both life and death as you control the fates by accessing the subterranean vaults of Stannard Rock. A buck tail jig tipped with slice of cut sucker bait, sweetens your offering beyond refusal or use the latest in high tech synthetic lines with micro reels and graphite spinning rods to cast spoons which will directly connect you to a monster from the frigid depths. Come with us and learn the ancient secrets and the modern day rituals to open your way to " Trout Magic".
Our technique is to map out the geologic bottom using satellite positioning systems and sonar to find locations were bait fish are slammed against a structural trap, or better yet where a fly hatch is occurring on a near surface reef, stacking up feeding Lakers in a long thin column. We set-up for a silent drift across the hottest spots and cast spoons into the feeding fish. These hatches create a towering effect were a small but dense band of crustaceans spiral their way up through the waster column to emerge at the surface as flying insects. This combination is all that is necessary for a feeding frenzy. Another favorite technique is to find a vertical subterranean cliff were the Lakers school up and jam the bait (smelt & herring) up against a bedrock trap creating a massive food source for a feeding binge. The word "Rampage" can hardly describe the experience of the "bite" at the Rock. When the bite is on, time stands still as one lusty Laker after another willingly inhales your lure. What we do in this lifetime echos throughout eternity, if you have not made the blue water run to Stannard Rock then you still have one more journey to make... ![]() |
